超楽しかった!

*For some reason blogger wouldn't let me upload another batch of pictures right now so I'm going to try to do 5 more a little later*

Ahhh I had to much fun today! I'll get to Kyoto soon, but I want to talk about today first since it was so much fun. Class ended today at 12:30 and then I went with two friends from class to see a movie called Drop. It wasn't showing at the first two theatres we looked at, but we found out that it was showing one station over so we walked there, bought tickets and then went to eat lunch. We went to a little ramen shop where we were the only ones there and I had some gyouza (dumplings) and rice. When we were done I used some new vocab we learned today and said the I was so full I couldn't move. The guy working there thought it was pretty funny.
The movie was really really good! It was all in Japanese with no subtitles but I understood about 50% of the words and knew what was going on the whole time. If anyone understands Japanese and likes seeing high school boys (played by Japanese idols) beat each other up I highly recommend it :)
Side note- you know you're becoming Japanese when one of the main characters jumps into his car through the windshield and you and your friends yell かっこういい!! (COOOL!!)

Lately I've been watching Japanese dramas online, which are extremely popular here. TV shows are so much different that the US. They have a scheduled stop time and follow a specific story- often only 10 or so episodes. So much different from in the US where if a show gets good ratings it will stretch on and on until it's completely awful *coughlost7thheavenERheroesdesperatehousewives24needigoon?cough*
Anyway, dramas are fun because the language isn't that difficult to understand and I have started recognizing a lot of Japanese celebrities. I think half the cast of Hexagon was in the movie I saw today.

On to Kyoto!
Kyoto was a really fun trip and I saw lots of cool things but it was incredibly tiring!! We probably walked upwards of 12 or so miles. My feet were absolutely killing me when I got home.
Kyoto is a lot different from the other cities I have visited because it is smaller and a mostly historical town. All of the places we visited were shrines and temples. Kyoto is nestled in the mountains so there was tons of pretty scenery to enjoy, plus the weather was fantastic! I got away with wearing shorts and a t-shirt every day, but unfortunately I got a little sunburnt. It was especially beautiful because the sakura petals were just starting to fall and every time the wind blew it looked just like snow! I can't even say that I remember the names of all of the places we went because the shrines and neat scenery all kind of blurred together in my head but I will put up a bunch of pictures of cool things I saw. I'm really glad that I got to visit Kyoto, but I am actually a bigger fan of huge cities like Nagoya, Osaka, and Tokyo. Nothing can compare to the big cities lit up at night. Probably my favorite thing I did in Kyoto was wade in a river with mountains and sakura trees in the background. Pretty!(Further proof that everything in Japan must be cute. Meet Kogomi-chan- literally Baby Trash)
(Yudofu- boiled tofu that is famous in Kyoto)

This week the biggest mall in the Nagoya area opened up. Good news- it's only a 15-20 minute walk from my house! Bad news- it's only a 15-20 minute walk from my house! I already went there on Wednesday, but I got tired before I checked out the whole thing. I'm pretty sure I'll be going back there sometime soon!

Meg

Fact of the Day: Kyoto was actually the capital of Japan before Tokyo. Nara was the capital for a while before Kyoto though. I believe that the capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo because Tokyo was considered a safer location, being that it is farther away from potential invaders like Korea and China.
